I leave local AI tools running all day now, on top of a Safari window I have never once closed. My five-year-old M1 MacBook Pro swaps constantly and I can feel it: the chip is still willing, the memory ran out years ago. The plain M5 chip caps out at 32GB, so the only way past that is the M5 Pro chip, which jumps straight from 24GB to 48GB. RAM is the one upgrade you can’t buy later, so this is where the money goes.
The Pro has a fan, and that matters
Every fanless laptop tells the same story: a long export starts fast and slows down a few minutes in. The Pro holds its speed because it can cool itself. My M1 has a fan too, and in five years I have never minded hearing it.

Dell XPS 14, if you need Windows. It’s the Windows laptop I’d point a friend to first, on build quality and screen.
I haven’t used the M5 Pro in person, so whether the fan actually stays quiet under a real twenty-minute export, and how the keyboard feel compares to my five-year-old M1, are both things I’m taking from reviews, not my own hands.

Why not just get the base M5 with 32GB instead of paying for the Pro chip?
I thought about it, and for a while that was the plan. But the base chip has no path past 32GB at any price, so the memory decision and the chip decision turn out to be the same decision. I’m paying for cores I don’t especially need to get there.
Does the fan actually make a difference in daily use?
Not for browsing or writing, no. It matters the moment you export video or run a local model for twenty minutes straight, which is the work I keep doing on my current machine.
Is this overkill for someone who mostly writes and browses?
Probably, if that’s all you do. I’m buying the headroom because I know my usage creeps, not because today’s workload demands it.
